Christmas Lights

Out on the town with an ex-ex-girl
Who wanted to see a hipster boy
Who worked at the door and let us in for free
First thing I noticed were Christmas lights
That dangled down above the sold-out crowd
And made the club look almost clean

Now i can’t recall the details of the show
After all I’ve only ever known
Maybe 4 or 5 songs by the man
We stood in the crowd and watched him for a while
And he had this melancholy style
Sad and soft and lonesome honesty

Last time I checked the Christmas lights were still
turned on
Last time I checked the Christmas lights were
going strong

Everything else has changed since then
The hipster doorman disappeared
They didn’t put his obit in the Post
The sad-looking man who played that night
Is never gonna sing again
Too sad and soft and lonesome to survive

But -

Last time I checked the Christmas lights were
going strong
Last time I checked the Christmas lights were still
turned on
